FDA Considers Allowing Blood Donations from Gay Men

Since the early 1980’s, men who have have sex with another man at any time since 1977 have been banned from donating blood.Happening in Blood News

This policy was put into place before there were reliable methods of screening for HIV. Today however, some FDA members are favoring a change to this policy. While some doctors support the change, others worry the change might cause an increased risk of transferring the infection through a blood transfusion.

The FDA is considering changes in an upcoming hearing, although the agency has not said when it would act.
